SPA101 - Elementary Spanish 1

Catalog Description: This is an introductory course designed to develop Spanish language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to use and understand Spanish in context. Instructional strategies include lecture/discussion, group and individual work, oral exercises, video, reading and writing assignments. Additional laboratory practice will be required. Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to hold basic conversations, read simple passages, and write brief dialogues and paragraphs at the novice level. Students registering for SPA 101 are assumed to know little or no Spanish. Placement in language courses will be determined by the instructor. Three class hours Prerequisite: None

SPA102 - Elementary Spanish 2

Catalog Description: This is a continuation of Elementary Spanish I designed to develop Spanish language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to use and understand Spanish in context. Instructional strategies include lecture/discussion, group and individual work, oral exercises, presentations, video, reading and writing assignments. Additional laboratory supported practice will be required. The majority of instruction will occur in Spanish. Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to express themselves orally, read newspaper articles and other authentic materials, understand oral input, and write compositions at the high novice level. Placement in language courses will be determined by the instructor. Three class hours Prerequisite: SPA 101 or equivalent

SPA201 - Intermediate Spanish 1

Catalog Description: Enhances Spanish listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Emphasizes increasing the accuracy and depth of communicative abilities and cultural understanding. Strategies may include lecture/discussion, group and individual work, presentations, oral exercises, video, reading and writing assignments. Requires laboratory-supported practice. Instruction occurs in Spanish. Students express themselves verbally and in writing, read authentic sources, and understand clear, native speech at the intermediate level. Instructor determines final placement.

Catalog Description: Strengthens Spanish listening, speaking, reading and writing skills acquired in Intermediate Spanish I. Emphasizes increased accuracy and depth of the students? abilities and knowledge of contemporary Hispanic culture. Strategies may include lecture/discussion, group and individual work, oral exercises, presentations, video, reading and writing assignments. Requires laboratory-supported practice. Instruction occurs in Spanish. Students express themselves orally and in writing at the high-intermediate level and understand key concepts when spoken clearly at native speed. Instructor determines final placement.
